Rejected Designs

Below are 2 designs which have been rejected during the design process. Both web designs were rejected due to a lack of display of design laws. By referring to the Requirements of the project, these designs are missing design laws and principles such as:

  • Jakob’s Law
  • Hick’s Law
  • Efficiency
  • Memorability
  • Learnability
  • Utility
  • Effectiveness

Design One

Design One hides everything behind the menu with no call to action on either the homepage or ticket page in order to purchase tickets. The design tries to get the user to sign in, by having the button within the navigation but doesn’t make it clear as to what the log in does if the user can’t buy tickets. The navigation bar is lacking links while taking up a great deal of space. The companion app is just a resized version of the website with no app specific features that would be useful to the user during the festival.

Both the website and companion app do technically follow Hick’s Law in the sense of there are limited options as to what the user can choose from, however, the options are very generic and limited. This can lead to the user having to search through multiple options to find what they’re looking for, thus effecting the efficiency of the website and app. A sufficient way of resolving this could be placing a search bar onto the design.

Although there is a lack of demonstration on Hick’s Law, Jakob’s law is used. The designs are inspired by multiple existing festival, in particular the Parklife festival and the Wilderness festival. Because of this, the user may be somewhat familiar with the lay out and how the website and app can be navigated.

Design Two

Design two does make up from design ones lack of call to action with having a buy tickets button on the homepage but doesn’t follow it through on the tickets page. The design does make use of linking in socials but does not make effective use of space by leaving a lot of whitespace on each page. The companion app falls to the same failure as design one in not having any app specific features and just being a resized website.

As for Hick’s and Jakob’s Laws, the same principles and reasonings apply as of those design one. The only difference is that this design was inspired by the Leeds festival app and website.
