Development Log UI & UX Design Year One

Testing

In order to make improvements on the final designs for the app and the website, gaining user opinions is essential. In order to do this, a series of testing will take place. Three users will be given two sets of tasks to complete, one task being on the app and the other on the website. The type of testing that will be used is black box testing.

Black box testing sits alongside grey and white box testing. Figure 1 displays the technical differences between all three types. The reason for choosing the black box testing method is due to the users not having full knowledge on the Internal behaviour of the app or website. The user needs to make their judgements on the exterior behaviour of the system.

Black box testing

User 1

The first user to test the website and app will be persona one that was created in a previous blog post. This persona was based on a real person, Michael Boland who is about to graduate as a computer scientist with the current occupation as a Web Developer. This person often performs white box testing as opposed to black box testing. As well as assessing the external behaviours, this user may also give some opinions as to what can be improved internally which can be useful.

Task

User 1 has the task of testing the navigation of both the website and companion app.

Users Comments

“The flow of both the website and companion app was very easy to follow. The navigation between both the website and the app used the same styling making it easy for a user to understand. It is very easy to navigate quickly and easily in order to find what the user requires.”

User 2

The second user that will be testing is persona two, again this persona is based on a real person. Tristan George is an attendee of the festival so he will have no knowledge at all on the inner workings of the app or website.

Task

User 2 has the task to purchase tickets from the website and then access them on the app.

Users Comments

” Purchasing the tickets was easy, the button on the homepage to buy tickets is good as other festival websites do that too. It is also good when the tickets first get released as everyone rushes to buy them, it means I’m not trawling through the website trying to get to them. Auto filling information on the checkout saves me time, especially again when the tickets first get release and everyone is trying to buy them.It gives me a better chance of getting them before they sell out. The payment options are good, as a student money can be tight so having familiar credit options available is beneficial to me and it doesn’t make me think twice about buying them if I don’t feel like I have the money at the time.”

“Same as the website, the homepage of the app can take you straight to the tickets. Having a QR code is useful because I would probably use a paper ticket. The ability to add it to my Apple wallet is great because it would mean I don’t have to open the app every time to get it. Its also good for when people have had a drink as using your phone when drunk is harder and more time consuming, this just makes it easier.”

“I also like the picture on the home pages, the fisheye makes me feel like I’m actually at the festival.”

User 3

Following the pattern, user three will be persona three, Grace Pugh. Once again, this persona is based on a real person. Grace is a police officer who will be attending the festival as security.

Task

User 3 has the task to see how efficient accessing the emergency information and contact is.

Users Comments

“It is a fairly simple process getting to the information about the festival. The care and safety information is beneficial and helps people understand the rules before they get to the festival which in return, limits the issues that could occur during the festival.”

“The app is great for festival use, the location on the map will be useful for the people that attend the festival so that they don’t necessarily have to call for help if they aren’t in immediate danger. I like that security and emergency is kept separate as it limits the time it takes for the call to get to the right people, this intern could save someones life.”

Conclusion

To conclude from the blackbox testing, it can determined that the users found the system easy to navigate, easy purchase tickets and easy to find further reading about the festival. The users didn’t report any issues when using the prototype and had no suggested changes to feedback.
